Thanks for reading, Joy! That’s interesting that music skills and language skills share the same part of the brain. I can definitely see how learning to read music is almost like learning a second language. I took piano lessons in high school but haven’t really played since then. In college, I took up foreign languages as a hobby instead and learned Spanish (now am studying Italian). I wonder if foreign language learning works the opposite way and those who know multiple languages also find it easier to learn (or re-learn) an instrument. This is making me want to start playing the piano again just to find out. 🙂

I didn’t know he knew four languages. I’ve heard that people who are very musically talented are also very adept at learning new languages, because both skills use the same part of the brain. It is quite possible although Mendelssohn does not seem to have had any problems with social interaction. He was happily married and had many friends. His letters reveal a witty personality.
